Make Kit: Social enterprise plans scheme selling affordable healthy meal boxes

Social enterprise: Make It

A social enterprise is calling for help to launch a scheme selling affordable healthy meal boxes in a bid to tackle obesity.

Make Kit aims to make cooking nutritious meals easily and cheaply by way of a pack containing ingredients and a recipe.

The organisation, backed by NHS programme Healthy London Partnership is racing against time to reach its £16,000 crowdfunding target to pilot the scheme on an estate in Haggerston.

Steve Wilson, Make Kit co-founder, said: “In Hackney 41 per cent of 10 to 11-year-olds are overweight or obese.

“Research shows that cost is the main barrier to healthy eating, alongside the challenges of time, access and knowledge of how to cook healthy food.

“Make Kits aims to remove these barriers and make healthy, tasty food accessible to all.”

Each ‘family pack’ Make Kit, containing a meal for four people, would cost just £5. For £20 east Londoners would get a lunch and dinner for a week, plus porridge and fruit for breakfast.
