Fish and chip shops across Britain are being urged to serve the same size portions in a bid to fight obesity.

It comes after researchers found an enormous variation in the sizes of ‘medium’ portions at 600 different chippies.

Medium cod ranged from just 93g to 562g, while medium chips weighed anything from 100g to 797g, according to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board’s survey.

The board is now recommending a universal portion size so that hungry customers don’t accidentally over order.

Industry guidelines suggest a medium fish should weigh 170g and chips 284g.

The board also said standard portion sizes would cut waste and pave the way for clearer nutritional information.

Tom Pickerell, of seafood industry body Seafish, said uniform portion sizes would mean customers know what to expect.

Last month, a humble south east London chip shop was voted the best restaurant in London by TripAdvisor users.

The Golden Chippy on Greenwich High Road hit number one spot on the website with one breathless reviewer urging diners to “forget what you believed about fish and chips”.
