Beans on toast should be eaten by gout sufferers to combat pain caused by the condition, new research has revealed.

Experts from the University of Minas Gerais in Brazil found diets high in fibre contained in beans, wholemeal bread, rice and potatoes can cut arthritis pain.

The findings were published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology on Wednesday.

Gout is an inflammatory joint disease triggered by a build up of uric acid which causes sudden attacks of severe pain and swelling. It is often mistakenly linked to excesses of red wine.

Between one and two people in every 100 suffer from gout in Britain with sufferers mainly over 30 and men, according to the NHS.

Study author Dr Mauro Teixeira said: “By understanding the way foods interact with living organisms, we may be able to create diets that help people with the disease.”
