Ofsted’s London boss said remote learning is “second best” and everything must be done to keep schools open.

Children in Greenwich returned to the classroom today after the Government threatened the council with legal action for telling schools to close early.

Mike Sheridan, Ofsted’s regional director for London, said: “We know that children do best when they are in school, and that remote learning is second best, particularly for children most in need. We must do everything we can to keep schools open.”

Term ends on Friday for most schools. Next term secondary schools and colleges will be given access to rapid coronavirus testing in a bid to keep them open.

Students who currently have to self-isolate if they come into contact with someone with Covid-19 will be allowed to stay at school if they agree to be tested every day.
