London teenagers 'let down by colleges'

Teenagers in London are being let down by sub-standard colleges, according to the first capital-wide Ofsted report published today.

It found the quality of schools in London has risen and its secondary schools are now the best in the country, with the proportion of good or outstanding schools 15 per cent above the national average. But further education colleges are letting pupils down, and their low apprenticeship success rates are a “cause for concern.”

The report said London children surge ahead of those in other regions at the ages of 11, 16 and 19.

But the overall achievement of white British children is still “relatively weak.”
