A young woman was left fighting for her life after an horrific assault in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Police are investigating whether there was a “sexual motive” to the attack in Deptford.

The woman, aged in her late teens, was taken to hospital by members of her family at about 6.20am after the assault.

Scotland Yard said she is now in a stable condition in hospital.

A spokesman added: “Enquiries continue to establish if there was any sexual motive for the attack. As such, the investigation is being led by detectives from the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command. At this stage, officers must retain an open mind as to any motive.”

Detectives are now appealing for any witnesses or anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area of Creekside and Deptford Church Street between 3am and 6am on January 1 to contact them on 020 8721 4617 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
