A 62-year-old woman had to have a hip replacement after being knocked down by a cyclist riding on the wrong side of the road.

The woman was trying to cross King William Street, in the City of London, through stationary traffic when she was hit.

Police are investigating the incident and on Tuesday launched an appeal for the cyclist and any witnesses to come forward.

The rider was reportedly trying to go around a traffic island on the wrong side of the road, near the junction with St Swithins Lane and Lombard Street, when the accident happened at about 5pm on Wednesday, September 30, a City of London police spokesman said.

CCTV cameras captured the injured woman being helped away by two men after the accident, as the cyclist looked on.

The pedestrian suffered a fractured left hip and was forced to undergo a hip replacement as a result.

The cyclist initially stopped and spoke to a passer-by, who was helping the injured woman, before riding off without leaving contact details.

The extent of the woman's injuries only became clear at hospital.

Det Con Dominic Shaw, from the City of London Police, said: “We would like the cyclist or anyone who witnessed the incident on September 30 to come forward and speak to us.

"Any detail will benefit our investigation.”

Police said the cyclist was riding a hybrid or mountain bike and wearing a high visibility jacket.

Witnesses and the cyclist are urged to contact City of London Police on 020 7601 2999 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
