2007

1 November: Meredith Kercher found semi-naked with her throat cut in the bedroom of shared house.

4 November: Post-mortem examination reveals evidence of sexual activity.

6 November: Miss Kercher’s American flatmate, Amanda Knox, 20, arrested with Knox’s boyfriend, Italian student Raffaele Sollecito, 23, and Congolese Diya “Patrick” Lumumba, 38.

9 November: Judge rules the three suspects can be held for up to a year pending investigation.

11 November: Miss Kercher’s body repatriated.

15 November: DNA reportedly found on a kitchen knife belonging to Sollecito, with Knox’s DNA near the handle and Miss Kercher’s on the blade.

20 November: Rudy Hermann Guede, 20, from Ivory Coast, held in Germany. He later admits being in house on night of murder but blames unnamed Italian man. Lumumba released without charge.

2008

16 September: Judge Paolo Micheli grants Guede’s request for a fast-track trial.

28 October: Guede convicted and jailed for 30 years for sexual assault and murder, cut to 16 years on appeal.

2009

16 January: Trial of Knox and Sollecito begins.

6 February: Sollecito tells court he is not violent and has nothing to do with case.

6 June: Miss Kercher’s parents, John and Arline, give evidence saying they will never get over her death.

12 June: Giving evidence, Knox says she accused Lumumba “in confusion and under pressure”.

4 December: Knox and Sollecito convicted of killing and sexually assaulting Miss Kercher. Knox jailed for 26 years and Sollecito for 25.

2010

24 November: Appeal starts.

19 December: Court allows review of DNA evidence.

2011

25 July: Experts claim forensic scientists made errors with genetic evidence.

3 October: Trial verdict quashed, Knox and Sollecito released.

2013

26 March: Court of Cassation overturns the acquittals.
