A murder probe has been launched after a man was killed and a woman injured following an incident in North Yorkshire.

Police have not yet confirmed the nature of the incident but witnesses reported that it appeared to be a knife attack.

Officers taped off Finkle Street in Selby on Tuesday morning as an air ambulance landed nearby.

North Yorkshire Police said officers were sent to the scene just before 9am, where they found a man suffering serious injuries.

“He was treated at the scene by paramedics, but sadly died,” the force said.

A woman was also found injured and was taken to hospital for treatment. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and is being held in police custody, detectives said.

Pedestrians and motorists were blocked from using the road throughout the day, which is lined with shops and cafes.

One witness told Yorkshire Live: "It looked pretty intense.

"By the looks of the amount of the blood on the floor and the man carried out on the stretcher it had been a stabbing.”

It comes just days after two other men were knifed in the same town.

The men in their 30s were discovered on D'Arcy Road just after 11am on Sunday.

The force said they had suffered injuries believed to be caused by a "bladed article".

“One of the victims sustained minor injuries, the other was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with what were thought to be serious injuries; however he has since been discharged,” police said.

A 19-year-old man was arrested and remains in police custody.
