Rank and file police officers have congratulated Cressida Dick on becoming the Met Police’s first ever female commissioner.

The Police Federation of England and Wales, which represents 122,000 ordinary officers, said the role comes with “significant responsibility”.

Ms Dick, 56, takes on the £270,648-a-year position as Britain’s most senior police officer following Bernard Hogan-Howe’s resignation.

Her appointment as Metropolitan Police Commissioner with a £3 billion annual budget was announced by Home Secretary Amber Rudd today after consultation with Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Steve White, Chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales, said: “I’d like to extend both my personal congratulations, and those of the organisation, to Cressida Dick in being selected as the next Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service.

"This is one of the most significant roles in British policing and with it comes significant responsibility, not just in the public’s eyes but in those of the staff and officers looking for strong, resilient leadership at a time of significant on-going change across the service.”

Ms Dick beat competition from three shortlisted rivals, the current Met counter terror chief Mark Rowley, Essex chief constable Stephen Kavanagh and Sara Thornton, head of the National Police Chiefs' Council.

A former head of UK counter terrorism policing, she said she was “thrilled and humbled” to be given “great responsibility and an amazing opportunity.”
