A motorbike rider died after being hit by a stolen Range Rover police were chasing along the A3 dual carriageway in south-west London.

An independent investigation has been launched into the fatal crash near Putney Heath at roughly 12.30am on Monday.

It is understood the Range Rover failed to stop for police and a pursuit began.

The 4X4 then smashed into a motorbike and overturned.

The suspected thief has been arrested for various offences, including death by dangerous driving.

An Independent Office for Police Conduct spokesman said: “The motorbike rider was sadly declared dead at the scene.

"The occupant of the car was not seriously injured."

Commuters faced traffic chaos as the A3 remained closed on both directions between Robin Hood Way and Roehampton Lane. Congestion was reported in Coombe Lane.

The police watchdog added: "We were notified by the Metropolitan Police shortly after the collision and IOPC investigators attended the scene and the police post incident procedure to begin gathering information.

"We declared an independent investigation at 5.49am.

"Our thoughts are with the family of the rider who died and all those who have been affected by this incident.

"The investigation is at an early stage."

Scotland Yard confirmed the driver has been detained on suspicion of theft of the Range Rover, failing to stop for police, causing death by dangerous driving and driving under the influence of drugs.

Owners of the premium SUVs are increasingly concerned following a spate of thefts that have left many in London unable to get insurance.

On January 9, CCTV captured the moment thieves drove off in a £70,000 Range Rover they took one minute to break into in St John's Wood.

Over the last few years, the cars have been listed among the ten most stolen in the capital.

However, DVLA data showed a near 30 per cent decrease in Range Rover Sport thefts in 2023, suggesting a £10 million investment by owner Jaguar Land Rover to bolster anti-theft systems is having an impact. The crimewave is such an issue some owners have faced excessive increases in their motor insurance premiums.

Any witnesses yet to speak with police or anyone with dashcam footage is asked to contact the Met via 101, ref 110/29jan.
