More than 150 police officers have carried out a series of synchronised raids across London, Berkshire and Yorkshire as part of an operation to disrupt human trafficking networks.

Officers raided 17 properties across the UK today, following a major 18-month investigation.

A number of arrests were made and victims found by officers who executed warrants at several nail bars, as well as other properties.

Police said the victims have been taken into rest centres where they were being supported by officers and staff from the British Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Mears, of Thames Valley Police, said: "It is a criminal offence to traffic people into the UK.

"It is an offence to force people, by threats or coercion, to work unpaid or to pay off a debt. It is an offence to make people carry out acts against their will."
