Police have said they are treating the death of a man whose body was found in Hyde Park as murder.

Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command launched an investigation after police were called to the west London park at about 5.50am on Friday.

A member of the public said they had found an injured man in the park, and when officers attended they found a body.

Police said enquiries are continuing to establish the man's identity and inform his next of kin.

A post-mortem examination held earlier today at Westminster Mortuary was unable to determine a cause of death, but it showed that the man had been the victim of an assault.

Witnesses said the body was found clothed lying on the floor with a bag nearby, close to a public toilet block.

Police cordons were put in place at the scene, which is near to Speakers' Corner, and close to a mosaic commemorating The Reformers' Tree.

Police said no arrests had been made and enquiries were ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious or has information that may assist the investigation is asked to call police via 101, or to remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
