Detectives investigating the racist murder of Stephen Lawrence are following up “numerous calls and pieces of information” following a fresh CCTV appeal.

Scotland Yard released previously unseen footage on Monday of a mystery man spotted close to the spot where Stephen was knifed to death by a gang of six white men in south-east London in 1993.

The new clip showed the possible key witness wearing a distinctive ‘V’ emblem jacket at an off licence just 330 yards from the bus stop in Eltham where the 18-year-old was killed.

Images were produced using digital enhancement techniques following a review of the case, three years after grainy images were shown on BBC Crimewatch.

On Tuesday, Metropolitan Police said on Twitter that officers were “now following up numerous calls and pieces of information” received about the murder.

Issuing the dramatic new appeal Detective Chief Inspector Chris Le Pere said that it was “important” that police were able to question the man and urged the public to help identify him.

Gary Dobson, 37, and David Norris, 36, were jailed for life in 2012 after being found guilty of the attack.
