Two police officers were hurt after being attacked with an unknown liquid as they tried to break up disorder at Notting Hill Carnival.

Scotland Yard said the officers were treated by paramedics after the liquid was thrown at them when violence erupted in Ladbroke Grove.

Two men were arrested on suspicion of affray during the disorder near to the junction with Barlby Road on Monday – the second day of the Bank Holiday festivities.

A Met spokeswoman said no-one has been arrested for the assault on police and enquiries were continuing to find the people responsible.

Paramedics treated the two police officers for mild skin irritation. Police said it is not known exactly what the liquid was but it is not believed to be a corrosive substance.

The spokeswoman said: “At approximately 8.20pm on Monday, August 28 two officers dealing with disorder had an unknown liquid thrown at them, causing mild skin irritation.

“Two men were subsequently arrested for affray.

“There have been no arrests for the assault on police. Enquiries are on-going to identify the person or persons responsible.”

Police made more than 300 arrests and 28 officers were injured at the Bank Holiday festival – the world’s biggest carnival after Rio de Janeiro.

Scotland Yard said officers made 313 arrests for a range of offences including 112 for drugs and 58 for offensive weapons.

Twenty-eight officers were injured across both days, while 17 arrests were made for assault on police, the Met said.

The number of arrests is so far lower than in 2016, when more than 450 people were detained across the two days of festivities.

Police said this year some 14 arrests for sexual offences were also carried out, 37 public order arrests and 17 common assault arrests.

Officers seized a number of knives, batons, CS spray and a hammer.

The two-day Bank Holiday festivities saw hundreds of thousands of revellers dance their way around the west London carnival route.

Medics treated them for skin irritation but their injuries were not thought to be serious. Two other people were injured in a stampede as revellers fled in panic following the incident.
