Police are hunting for two thugs who shot and stabbed a 20-year-old man to death as he cycled through a housing estate in south east London.

The victim, whose name not yet been released by police, was gunned down and stabbed by two people in East Surrey Grove, Peckham just after 10.30pm yesterday.

He was taken to a hospital in central London by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service but died shortly afterwards, police said today.

The man's next of kin have been informed and a post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course, Scotland Yard said.

Detectives from the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command unit today launched an appeal for witnesses following the killing.

They believe his attackers fled the estate towards Sumner Road after the shooting.

A Met Police spokesman said this morning that had no arrests had been made so far in the investigation. Part of the estate was cordoned off today while police investigated at the scene.

Detective Chief Inspector Will Reynolds said: "At this early stage we believe that the victim was making his way into the estate by pedal cycle when he was confronted by two people who have shot him, stabbed him and left the scene on foot toward Sumner Road via a cut through from Cator Road.

"We know that local residents heard the shots and we are keen to speak with anyone who either witnessed the incident itself or saw the suspects fleeing the scene."

Anyone with information can contact police on 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800555111.
