An man was arrested in south east London today after he allegedly threatened members of the public with an axe.

Police were called to Downham Way, Lewisham at 8.22am and found a man with an axe.

Paramedics were called and took the man, in his 40s, to a south London hospital after he was reportedly assaulted by a group of men.

The injured man was arrested.

Downham officers posted a picture of an axe and said the man had threatened members of the public.

They tweeted: "Male arrested earlier in Downham Way by @MPSDownham Officers after he had threatened members of public with an AXE."

A police spokesman said: “Enquiries are ongoing to trace the whereabouts of a group of men who inflicted injuries on this man prior to him arming himself with a weapon."
