A police officer suffered a broken leg as he - and members of the public - tried to arrest the driver of a car who failed to stop for police.

Officers in a marked car were on patrol in East Dulwich when they noticed a black BMW being driven in a suspicious manner.

The officers began to follow the car which then sped off. The BMW drove down East Dulwich Road and was then caught in traffic in St Mary’s Road.

The driver tried to reverse but was boxed in by a member of the public in another car when he realised what was happening.

Officers got out of the patrol car and tried to detain the driver. The BMW then drove into the two officers.

Police say the car was then boxed in by second member of the public in their car and the driver was arrested.

One of the officers, a male police constable from Southwark, suffered a suspected broken leg and was taken to hospital.

The other officer was not seriously injured but did attend hospital as a precaution. Four other officers required medical treatment for minor injuries.

A 33-year-old man - was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He is currently in custody in a south London police station
