Thugs who wield a knife in public will face automatic jail sentences.

Adults will get a minimum prison term of six months and 16 and 17-year-olds at least four months in a detention centre.

A new offence of using a knife to threaten or endanger other people will come into force on Monday.

“People need to realise they will now go to jail,” said Enfield North MP Nick de Bois who campaigned for the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 to include the offence for 16 and 17-year-olds.
