A Hatton Garden jeweller has been accused of deliberately ramming former cycling czar Andrew Gilligan off his bike in an alleged road rage attack.

Chukwudi Uzorh, 28, allegedly used his black Nissan Juke car to assault Mr Gilligan, driving into the journalist and leaving him injured in a heap on the ground.

Mr Gilligan, who was appointed London’s first cycling commissioner in 2013 by former London mayor Boris Johnson, said he feared being paralysed after the incident in Bishopsgate.

Uzorh, a goldsmith who works for a Hatton Garden jewellers, was due to appear before City of London magistrates today. He faces two charges — assaulting Mr Gilligan on April 4 last year “with a motor vehicle” and dangerous driving.

Mr Gilligan, 50, a former Evening Standard reporter and now senior Sunday Times correspondent, said after the alleged attack he was “very, very shaken” and needed hospital treatment for cuts down his shins.

Uzorh, from Camden, was arrested after the alleged assault and released while police investigated. He has not yet entered pleas to the charges.
