Two teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 16-year-old boy was knifed to death in a weekend of bloodshed across London.

The killing — the fifth homicide in six days in the capital — happened close to the park where Jodie Chesney, 17, was murdered in March 2019.

The boy is the 13th teenager to die in a knife attack this year, just two short of the 15 in 2020 and on course to overtake the figure of 26 in 2019.

Police were called on Friday evening to Church Road, Harold Wood, east London, following reports of a fight involving a number of youths.

The victim was found suffering from a stab injury and died at the scene.

Witnesses said he had been set upon by machete-wielding thugs in balaclavas and chased out of the park.

Retired teacher Elisabeth Honeysett, 60, said: “There was a young boy crying. He was saying ‘he died in my arms’.”

Ten minutes later, two boys aged 15 and 17, were found with stab wounds nearby. They have been arrested on suspicion of murder and were continuing to receive treatment in hospital today. Another 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of affray.

At 1am on Saturday, a man in his thirties died shortly after reports of shots fired outside a bar in Gillett Square, Dalston. Detective Chief Superintendent Marcus Barnett, the Met commander for Hackney, tweeted: “Utterly devastated, so so so sad! When will this stop? More lives needlessly lost, more families devastated, more hurt and pain in communities.”

Then at 7.35pm on Saturday a young man was stabbed in the leg during a brawl in Selfridges. Video footage on social media appeared to show a number of men facing off against each other inside the store in Oxford Street.

The injured man was taken to hospital before being arrested on suspicion of affray. Seven other people were arrested on suspicion of causing GBH and affray.

Meanwhile Abdirizak Hassan, 24, has been named as the man found stabbed to death on an estate in Dowdeswell Close, Putney on Thursday morning.

A 33-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, has been bailed until a date later this month.
