The family of a shopkeeper left fighting for his life after he was shot in the chest in an attempted armed robbery told of their concern today.

Father-of-three Abbas Boran, 53, from Chingford, was blasted with a shotgun as he and a colleague chased two thieves from the Show Supermarket in Plaistow High Street on Halloween.

Surgeons at the Royal London Hospital have operated on Mr Boran twice. Relatives said he had been put in an induced coma and he remains in a critical condition. Today Mr Boran’s cousin Meltem Boran told the Standard: “He had his second operation on Sunday and it went well. He is hopefully getting better, but we’re not sure.

“His family are at the bedside around the clock.”

A nephew, who asked not to be named, said: “Everyone is just hoping he will pull through. It’s so sad. All he was doing was protecting his business.”

Mr Boran’s colleague, in his forties, was shot in the leg, but has since been discharged from hospital.

Last night two men who were arrested in connection with the shooting were released on bail.
