A cheerleader is alleged to have distributed cannabis-laced brownies to fellow students in an effort to be named homecoming queen, police say.

Police in Hartford, Michigan, are investigating the allegations at Hartford High School but it is unclear if the campaign tactic actually won her the crown.

WXMI-TV reported that three brownies recovered from students at the school have been sent to the state police crime lab for testing. Investigators say nine other brownies remain unaccounted for.

Officer Michael Prince said the force learned through a tip-off that the brownies were taken to the school on September 26 and were "distributed in goodie bags for the football team and the leftovers were used for homecoming queen votes".

He told the WMMT radio station: “You always think you’ve heard it all and seen it all, and there is always something new to surprise you.

“We are investigating two things. Number 1, some were put in goody bags for players. Also, they were used to obtain votes for the queen contest.”

Hartfield Public Schools put out a message to parents informing that they were warned that students were "consuming marijuana-laced brownies".

"Mr Janicki and his staff members immediately acted on the tip and started an investigation," she authority said. "All individuals involved are being dealt with according to our district policies and student handbook.

Police are hoping to interview the cheerleading suspect and her mother when they return home from a trip.
