A woman has been killed in a suspected arson attack just hours after she spoke to police.

Emergency services rushed to a house on Alric Avenue in Brent, north-west London, at 2.15am on Thursday following reports of a fire.

The victim, 36-year-old Denise Keane, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. She was pronounced dead just after 6am.

Another woman, in her 60s, was also taken to hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are treating the fire as suspicious. Detectives are investigating.

A man, in his 40s, was arrested on suspicion of arson and murder and remains in police custody.

It is understood the man and the 36-year-old woman knew each other. However, formal identification of the victim is yet to be carried out.

Scotland Yard has confirmed that the victim was in contact with police hours before the fatal incident – prompting a professional standards review.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting reference CAD 591/16 April.
