Premier League star Adam Johnson has been charged with engaging in sexual activity with a girl under the age of 16.

The Sunderland winger, 27, was today charged with three offences of sexual activity with a child under 16.

He was also charged with one count grooming, police said.

Johnson was arrested on March 2 at his mansion in leafy Castle Eden, County Durham, over claims he slept with a 15-year-old girl.

He was charged today after attending Peterlee police station to answer bail.

The former Manchester City player, who has been capped 12 times by England, was initially suspended and then reinstated by Sunderland following his arrest.

He and girlfriend Stacey Flounders had their first baby this year, and both she and her family are said to be supporting him, The Mirror reported.
