A new hotel is opening on France’s Côte d'Azur that looks set to bring back the old-school glamour of the Riviera.

Modernist and chic and yet understated, Les Roches Rouges opened on May 4.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new five star hotel:

Where is it?

On the mesmerising Côte d'Azur in the south of France, 10 minutes from the lovely town of St Raphael and an hour’s drive from Nice.

Who’s behind it?

Les Hôtels d’en Haut, a French hotel group with four mountain retreats in the French Alps. Les Roches Rouges marks its first foray into the seaside from the slopes.

What’s the style?

Low-key, understated luxury with a Provençal touch is the name of the game here. This is for people who love the French Riviera, minus the flashy glitz of neighbouring St Tropez and Cannes. It’s not hard to imagine Brigitte Bardot sauntering about the chic, modern bedrooms with her straw bag and lounging in a chic one-piece by the natural infinity pool’s edge.

How many rooms are there?

Fifty in total – a mix of rooms and suites. Each one is filled with light and streamlined towards the view to let nature do the talking – with touches of orange, ochre, lemon yellow and deep blue offsetting the white base. Classic sea views rooms come with Le Labo treats and a terrace where you can take your breakfast.

What about food & drink?

There are three bars and two restaurants at Les Roches Rouges. The main inspiration here is Provençal fare where local produce is king – think fish, shellfish, lots of herbs, olive oil and plump tomatoes. There's a rooftop restaurant as well as a more casual restaurant one on the beach, which serves up simple Mediterranean dishes like salads by day and sharing feasts like bouillabaisse by night, under the stars. Each of the restaurants has its own bar, and a third – the ‘beach hut’ – pops up during the day by the water, serving cocktails and light bites.

Any other facilities?

There are two swimming pools, an exquisite natural seawater pool that drops into the azure sea, a Mediterranean garden filled with everything from gigs to lavender, and an open-air cinema.

What else is there to do?

At the hotel you can try a lazy game of petanque, practise your downward dog at yoga, borrow a paddleboard or sign up to a cookery course. For the more intrepid, there is diving, sailing, fishing and hiking all on the hotel's doorstep.

It’s worth having a car so you can explore the local area and nearby beaches, as well as the bijou market town of Saint Raphael, which is a 10 minute drive away.

How to get there

It’s best to fly to Nice (75km away) and then get a taxi or hire a car. Visit cheapflights.co.uk for the best flight deals.
