From Grace Kelly to Oprah Winfrey, any A-lister worth their salt will have paid a visit to Hotel Bel-Air. This beautiful retreat is the stuff of Hollywood dreams...

Where is it? In the most exclusive neighbourhood in Los Angeles. Home to movie and music moguls, Bel-Air is is a beacon of glamour in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains.

The palatial pink structure forms the heart of the community.

What's the story? Nestled in 12 acres of landscaped gardens, this iconic hotel is a retreat for some of the most high profile people in the world. To put it in perspective, Beyonce called Hotel Bel-Air home when her house was undergoing a renovation.

Part of the Dorchester Collection, it epitomises luxury but that's not to say that there is a formal atmosphere. Quite the opposite, in fact. This is where the glitterati like to chill out by the pool, enjoy a lazy brunch or stay late in the intimate bar.

Design details: Known for its Spanish Colonial architecture, the hotel interiors were completely revamped a few years ago under the direction of Alexandra Champalimaud and the The Rockwell Group.

Taking on such a legendary building was no easy feat but the sensitive restoration champions old school Hollywood glamour while giving it a 21st Century lift. There are stylish nods to the past including the vintage black and white celebrity photographs by Norman Seeff which hang on the walls of The Bar and Lounge.

The entrance itself is like something from a Marilyn movie with the hotel's very own Swan Lake set in paradise gardens.

There is a lovely blend of cool, calming colour schemes with bold accessories and fabulous plants.

Which room? Each of the guest rooms features smart decor and a range of innovative technology, from Bang & Olufsen televisions to desks with integrated media hubs and iPads. There are 45 suites to choose from, including signature suites with large garden patios and fireplaces.

If you really feel like pushing the boat out, the Presidential Suite has its own private courtyard and infinity pool. There is even a bar for social gatherings.

On the menu: Wolfgang Puck at Hotel Bel-Air has a fantastic reputation for California cuisine with European and Mediterranean influences. Chefs visit the farmer’s market every week and select the most seasonal items. There is an elegant dining room, on the alfresco terrace, or in the bar and lounge.

It is a popular spot for a delicious breakfast or brunch too. Our favourites include Avocado Toast or an Acai Bowl.

Best for: a very special stay in one of LA's finest establishments.
