Overlooking one of the world's top museums, Gran Hotel Domine is a must for design lovers...

Where is it? Opposite the Guggenheim in the arts district of Bilbao. The Fine Arts Museums, the Iberdrola Tower and the Euskalduna Palace are all on the doorstep. You really are in the heart of the cultural action here.

Design details: This smart property with 145 rooms was renovated in 2017 and reflects its design focused surroundings.

The brainchild of Javier Mariscal, he has done a grand job of combining contemporary features with local heritage.

Upon entering the hotel, you will notice a 26 metre high stone sculpture (pictured above) which rises to the blue dome glass ceiling. Furniture is centred on 20th century design and colour plays a crucial role. Each of the floors in the building focuses on a different palette.

Bedrooms have pops of red, blue and yellow with striking stone bathrooms. The Philippe Starck bathtubs (pictured below) are a real treat. For Bauhaus architectural style, head to The Metropol Café.

Is there a spa? Yes, Wellness by Domine offers beauty and health treatments. It is kitted out with an oriental look. There is also a Turkish bath and sauna. Plus, there is a gym on site.

Which room? Definitely go for a room with a view of the Guggenheim through the panoramic windows. They come in different tiers, from deluxe to suites. The Premier is a good half way option.

On the menu: The rooftop terrace has fabulous views and is the perfect place to enjoy cocktails. For meat and fish focused, seasonal cuisine with Basque roots try Beltz. The elegant setting is a good place to unwind, sampling delicious food and great wine.

It is also worth visiting sister property, Hotel Miro. It is just a short stroll away and is known for the Brown Bread Bag breakfast. Working with local producers, ingredients are fresh and beautifully presented. Salted porridge, pancakes and lemon-lime cupcakes are on the menu. The coffee is good too. The All Day option is served until 2pm on weekends.

Best for: A culture packed weekend in Bilbao.

When to go: the Guggenheim has a rotation of exhibitions as well as its permanent display. Check the website to see what jumps out and tie in a trip accordingly.

Price: from around 150 euros per night for a double room.

A feast for the senses at Azurmendi

When visiting Bilbao, a night at the three Michelin star Azurmendi restaurant is an absolute must.

The passionate work of Eneko Atxa, it offers an experience like no other.

Cuisine, culture and customs align to create a truly magical dining journey. On arrival you will enter a vast, light-filled space and be greeted by a picnic. As you bite into your exquisitely prepared creations it becomes apparent that something very special is about to happen.

You will then be taken into the kitchen where the chefs meticulously beaver away, reflecting the drama and quiet passion for this project. They will present you with truffled egg and vermouth. Delightful.

There is one more stop before making it into the dining room. This time at the greenhouse, where plants are grown and eaten on the spot. From fermented apple to herb curd, prepare for your tastebuds to be challenged.

Then it is over to the balcony, a spacious area with floor to ceiling windows and generously sized tables. Here you will learn the true meaning of the phrase "a feast for the senses" and gradually lose count of the amount of courses.

From garlic mushrooms to red mullet in three services and a whole new spin on chocolate, this extensive tasting menu is phenomenal.

Go hungry and leave feeling astounded by the sheer gastronomic pleasure.

There are two tasting menus on offer, both priced at 220 euros. Book a table at azurmendi.restaurant.
