Caesar Augustus, Capri – hotel review

Amy Louise Bailey discovers an old-world jewel in Capri
The Caesar August hotel by night

The supremely chic island of Capri is renowned for its natural beauty, exceptional cuisine and historic glamour. For centuries, the destination on Italy's Amalfi Coast has played host to legions of tastemakers that have been seduced by its romantic charm. As with many coveted vacation spots, the best way to experience Capri is away from the tourist areas and the crowds. Caesar Augustus offers a postcard-style setting where Capri’s unique serenity can be fully appreciated.

Where is it? Situated in Anacapri (Capri’s highest vantage point), Caesar Augustus is undoubtedly one of the finest places to experience the island. With panoramic views of Mount Vesuvius, the Sorrento Peninsula and the azure- blue Bay of Naples, the hotel’s clifftop position captures the magic of the island's dramatic landscape.

Style: The five-star hotel is defined by classic elegance. A collection of antiques, colourful artworks and glossy coffee-table books provide an inviting atmosphere, evoking that of a private residence.

The Master Suite

This family-run hotel was once home to a Russian prince, who commissioned the iconic Caesar Augustus statue on the terrace. It was in the 1940s that the Signorini family effectively began to transform the property into an elite, luxury hotel complete with opulent bedrooms and palatial marble bathrooms affording 180-degree ocean views in complete privacy.

Facilities: The property includes a double-level infinity pool overlooking the Bay of Naples, a spa, an outdoor wellness area, and what seems like an endless horizon of gardens and sprawling terraces. Due to the boutique nature of the hotel, the facilities never feel crowded.

Wellness is a feature of Caesar Augustus

Extra-curricular: Caesar Augustus’s multilingual and knowledgeable staff are experts in providing customised itineraries. Whether you’re interested in finding bespoke sandals, organizing a trip to the Blue Grotto (a sea cave on Capri's coast), walking up the road to Villa San Michele or venturing out for an evening aperitif, their black book of recommendations is always on point.

The al fresco restaurant

Food and drink: Under Eduardo Vuolo’s direction, La Terrazza di Lucullo, offers what he proudly refers to as ‘Capri on a plate.’

All of the herbs, fruit and vegetables are grown just metres from the kitchen in the organic garden. Meat, seafood and cheeses are sourced from trusted local suppliers and from the wider Campania region.

Vuolo’s vegetable-rich, seasonal menu offers healthy dishes that don’t compromise on flavour. It’s fresh, al fresco dining at its best.

For extra special occasions, there is the option of dining in complete isolation at the poolside restaurant’s private terrace – serenading guitar player included.

A bird's eye view of the terrace

Which room? Caesar Augustus boasts six master suites and 49 individually appointed rooms. Naturally, the suites offer the most jaw-dropping views and spectacular settings, so booking into one of these gives you no reason to venture out.

In the suites, guests can enjoy a local wine from the complimentary minibar and watch the sun set from the suite’s cliff-edge terrace. Or, for an indulgent night in, pop a bottle of Prosecco and watch the stars from the ocean-facing Jacuzzi.

Vesuvius Suite at Caesar Augustus

Best for: It is one of the most idyllic destinations for those in search of a romantic escapade. Each of the hotel’s suites is perfectly appointed to cater to couples and honeymooners alike.

When should you go: Caesar Augustus is open from April to October. Our recommendation would be to go on either end of the season, to avoid the summer crowds.

Price: Depending on the room category and the season, the rooms generally range from 360€ (Classic Garden View, during low season) to 4,800€ (Capri Master Suite, during high season).
