Some Greek islands are suffering from overtourism (hello Santorini), while others hardly have any inhabitants at all.

The island of Antikythira, located between Crete and Kithira, is home to just 24 people – something the local council wants to change.

Despite having idyllic beaches and abundant land, the island has seen a decline in inhabitants which is why a repopulation campaign has been launched with the help and sponsorship of the Orthodox Church.

While Greek citizens will be prioritised as the new inhabitants, those who are successful in their application will receive a house, a parcel of land to either farm or build a business on, and a monthly cheque of €500 for the first three years.

The island has just one village, Potamos, and is a 45-minute plane ride to Athens and a two-hour ferry to Crete.

The catch? The council facilitating the move is looking solely for young families – so couples and singletons need not apply.

The project has actually already been in place for at least six months and the Los Angeles Times report that four families are already in the process of moving to Antikythira.

If living on a dreamy, remote island in Greece sounds like your cup of tea, you will need to contact Antikythira’s local council.
