Amira Hashish explores Kit Kemp’s design haven in the heart of Soho where hotel perks meet luxury accommodation…

Where is it? Tucked away in a pretty courtyard in the heart of Soho, One Denman Place is part of Ham Yard Village. Previously a deserted 3/4 acre site, it has been impressively transformed into an urban shopping, dining and hotel destination connecting Great Windmill and Denman Street via a tree-filled public thoroughfare.

What’s the story? These 24 luxury apartments are the latest UK project by owner and design director Kit Kemp. The beautifully decorated flats have a dedicated reception and private entrance. They also benefit from the facilities of the neighbouring Ham Yard Hotel, a member of Kit and Tim Kemp’s boutique Firmdale group. There are three duplexes in addition to the studio, one and two bedroom apartments.

Entering into the residential property market for the first time, this is a different concept to the usual Firmdale offering. With minimum three-month lets, the properties act as a home away from home for residents. Apartment manager Scott Kennedy gets to know each of the guests personally and goes above and beyond to give them the warmest of welcomes. Nothing is too much trouble.

Design details: from the moment you enter Ham Yard village, design is at the core. The property is centred around a sparkling garden with a bronze sculpture centrepiece by Tony Cragg. Kit Kemp has worked her magic on the interiors. Her signature luxurious, modern British style with an eclectic mix of colour, pattern, and texture is showcased in the living areas. Full length warehouse type windows evoke a New York loft vibe.

Fabric covered walls, grey oak floors, bespoke furniture, Italian Boffi kitchens, luxurious marble bathrooms and a fully integrated AV control system are part and parcel of the sumptuous nature. Fans of Firmdale Hotels will spot the statement print headboards and fabric manikins on show in the bedrooms. Book lovers will delight in the library walls, filled with hardback novels and biographies.

Every twist and turn has been considered with hallways donning Kit Kemp designed floral wallpaper. Each item of homeware has been carefully selected, from comfortable armchairs to the pretty botanical side tables or crockery made in collaboration with Wedgwood. The spaces blend practicality with style, making them very liveable.

Which room? Apartments can be selected according to size and some come with outdoor spaces. We love the two-bedroom Apartment 10 for its décor and view across the Ham Yard courtyard. The oak floors create an airy feeling, each of the bedrooms are king size and have en suite bathrooms with a bath and shower.

On the menu: One of the great perks of living in a hotel is the room service. Residents at One Denman have access to the Ham Yard food offerings 24 hours a day. However, the cheerfully decorated restaurant is located just across the courtyard and is definitely worth visiting. An open plan space, adjoining the popular bar, there is a buzzing atmosphere.

Try the leek and potato soup, pan fried scallops or ballotine of rabbit to start. The Dover sole or rib eye steak from the grill are excellent options for mains. Dessert is also a real treat. Anyone with a sweet tooth will particularly enjoy the chocolate glazed dulce de leche salted mousse with caramel popcorn, the white chocolate cheesecake or sticky treacle and clotted cream pudding. Excellent service is the icing on the cake.

This is a great spot for breakfast as well. From traditional English breakfast to porridge, there are a la carte options for varying appetites and the continental buffet is well stocked.

One Denman and Ham Yard guests also have access to a a large, leafy rooftop garden with sweeping views over the London skyline. The perfect spot for a cosy drink.

Is there a spa? Yes, a full range of body and beauty treatments can take place in the in the Soholistic Spa or in the comfort of your room. As well as treatment rooms there is a relaxation area, steam room and showers, gym and changing rooms.

Anything else I should know? There is plenty of entertainment including an on-site theatre where the walls are lined with electric blue wool, with striking tangerine orange leather seats and bright fuchsia pink silk curtains framing the stage.

The Croc bowling alley can be booked for private events and is a brilliant party space. Back-lit bowling balls, vintage bowling shoes and bowling pin lamps sit alongside two large scale Howard Hodgkin artworks. The silver baby grand piano and South African made sofas give a lounge feel.

There is also The Dive Bar, named in honour of a three foot neon lit lady diver, which hangs on the far wall alongside cascading Kit Kemp designed Rick Rack wall fabric by De Gournay.

How to get there: Piccadilly Circus and Regent Street are practically on the doorstep so transport links could not be better.

Best for: Luxury long stays without the hassle.
