With Christmas only a few weeks away, most of us have started planning our festive decor.

In Scandinavia, where the winters are long and dark, Christmas is a welcome break. Scandinavians go all out when it comes festive decorations, which will be put up on the first Sunday of advent.

In Sweden, most homes will have an adventsljusstake in every window. This is a special festive candlestick which lights up the streets with a cosy glow, spreading Christmas cheer.

To get a bit of that cheer in your home, here are our top tips:

Go Green

Scandinavian Christmas decor is all about evergreen branches, trees, pinecones and wreaths. If you don't have space for a big tree, add some branches to a vase and hang your decorations from the twigs. Use any spare branches to create a wreath for the front door.

Candlelight

Candles create a cosy lighting which will make your home feel hygge this Christmas. Invest in some festive candlesticks or fairy lights - we love the traditional angel chimes candle holders, £15 from Skandium. A festive scented candle is also perfect to create a yuletide atmosphere. Our hand poured Christmas candles from Att Pynta will do the trick!

Decorate

Go all out. In Scandinavia it is common to change your curtains, cushion covers, lighting, and even rugs in time for the season. We suggest investing in some good quality decorations that will look great year on year. Copper and brass decorations are a good way to go, as the warm shade of metal looks great against green. We recommend steering away from cheap disposable supermarket decorations - and go easy on the tinsel.

For your fill of all things Scandi this Christmas, check out the East Village's Makers Market this weekend. The cosy indoor market has embraced the hygge, showcasing London's best makers, where you can pick up everything from wreaths, to slippers and, of course, homewares.
