Starting with school sex education lessons girls are taught that the onus for contraception lies with them. Boys are handed a fistful of glow-in-the-dark condoms while their female peers receiving a leaflet delineating their myriad ‘options’.

Despite recent controversy surrounding the pill and its possible side effects, health practitioners and pharmacists continue to dole it out like sweets. The morning-after pill on the other hand, has never received such easy-going treatment. Responsible women are still subject to uncomfortable stares and a lecture about contraception when buying the morning-after pill, and then stiffed with a hefty price tag.

Not anymore, this week saw the launch of the first same-day delivery service by emergency contraceptive manufacturer ellaOne. It decided to offer the speedy online service after discovering that 57 per cent of women would still avoid getting emergency contraception due to embarrassment

The morning after pill works by postponing or preventing ovulation so that no egg is released. This means that any sperm waiting in the fallopian tubes will be unable to fuse with an egg and fertilise it. The sooner you take the pill the better but pills including ulipristal acetate such as ellaOne must be taken within five days of unprotected sex, and pills containing levonorgestrel should be taken within three days.

Those based in London can request an ‘express service’ and receive the pill within three hours, elsewhere in the UK the delivery time is within 24 hours.

The morning-after pill has come a long way since its launch in 1984, weathering antiquated accusations of inciting promiscuity and irresponsible attitude towards contraception. This new delivery service marks a new chapter for female reproductive health, but it comes at a cost, the contraception itself will set you back £34.95, with additional delivery charges if you request the express option.
