British drivers bought 79,060 new cars in August. That’s a year-on-year increase of 9.6%.

The latest figures mean the car market has grown by 6.7% so far in 2015.

And there’s good news from the low-emissions sector, too – which has seen the strongest growth of all. Compared to August 2014, registrations of vehicles with alternative fuel sources grew by 53.2%.

Mike Hawes, boss of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, attributes the sustained strength of the market to ‘attractive finance deals and a diverse range of technologically advanced models.’ And with the bi-annual change in number plates boosting the market, the SMMT expects September’s results to be just as strong.
