Britain may be small but it has no shortage of regional accents and minority languages.

In fact, it could be fair to say that the UK has some of the most vibrant accents and customs of any country (at least comparitive to its size).

Yet, despite it being incredibly easy to travel around and experience the country, many of us have no idea what particular phrases mean outside of our immediate geographical area.

In a survey conducted by The Language Gallery it was found that people are completely baffled by local lingo from all over.

According to the research...

1. 96 per cent of people don’t know the meaning of 'Antwacky'

2. 96 per cent of people don’t know the meaning of 'Teasy'

3. 95 per cent of people don’t know the meaning of 'Chirpsing'

4. 93 per cent of people don’t know the meaning of 'up a height'

5. 90 per cent of people don’t know the meaning of 'Toots'

‘Antwack’ actually originates from Liverpool and simply means ‘old-fashioned’. ‘Teasy’ means irritating and is used in Cornwall.

‘Chirpsing’ is a London term that describes flirting, ‘up a height’ means ‘you’re really stressed’ in Newcastle and if someone calls you ‘toots’ in Wales it means they think you’re a ‘precious one’.

Did you manage to guess any of them right? Well done if so. You can learn more unusual phrases in this quiz next.
