Road test: Skoda Yeti Outdoor

Skoda’s new Yeti has name and image, but don’t be deceived: beneath the recently facelifted skin beats the heart of an accomplished, versatile car.

The revamp has seen the Yeti range split into two styles, the Urban Yeti and the Outdoor version, with the option of four-wheel drive and mildly “ruggedised” bodywork tweaks.

Revisions to both include new bumpers, lights, bonnet and grilles. To demonstrate the new 4WD system, Skoda presented the Outdoor version on a waterlogged Cotswolds estate. It proved impressive, the new, fifth-generation Haldex 4WD system (aided by extra grippy tyres, hilldescent control and off-road button that softens the throttle mapping) making short work of boggy marshes and steep, muddy hills.

On the road, the 1.6 TDI version produced an ample 105 PS, enough for a top speed of 109mph and 0-62mph in 12.1 seconds. The 1.2 TSI petrol engine performed smoothly too, while those seeking more power will choose the 1.8 160PS petrol, or one of the 2.0-litre TDIs, producing 110PS, 140PS or a stonking 170PS. The range features five- and six-speed manual gearboxes, with the option of a seven-speed DSG auto on the 1.2, and a six-speed DSG on 2.0 TDI units.
