I'd like a new pair of specs but none seem to suit me. What's a good rule of thumb?

Start at David Clulow. Take a friend who won't stitch you up. Take pictures of yourself wearing various options. Take your time. There are three main considerations.

1. Face shape: if you have a round face, angular frames will give it structure. Square jaw? Soften it by choosing glasses with curved edges.

2. Skin tone: black or metallic frames can wash out pale complexions so consider tortoiseshell. Or a holiday. The darker your skin, the bolder you can be.

3. Fit: your eyes should sit in the middle of the lens. Off-centre and you'll appear boss-eyed. Not good.

Woolrich

When you're standing on a crowded platform waiting for your snowdelayed train to arrive, you want to be wrapped up in a duvet. The next best thing is a down-filled Arctic parka from Woolrich. My feathered friend is not only super-warm, but the hood also drowns out insincere automated Tannoy apologies. 81 Brewer Street, W1 (020 7494 9772)
