Ella Eyre has spoken out about the pressure on girls to be “model-skinny” — and how she hopes her success will help those struggling with body image.

The singer, 21, who rose to fame after singing with Rudimental, also revealed how she stood up to her label by insisting she record her own material on her debut album.

She told the Standard’s ES magazine: “I’m not model-skinny like a lot of the girls in the media, but there are lots of girls who feel insecure because of what they see in the media and I want to actively inspire everyone to appreciate the way they are.”

Eyre, who was born in Ealing, is due to perform next week at the launch of The Progress 1000 — the Standard’s annual celebration of influential Londoners. She is also the voice of the England Rugby World Cup anthem Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. On making her album, she said: “I was really young when I started out so it was hard to work out whether my instincts were right — particularly when a record label is telling you the opposite.

She added: “Everything I’ve written about is an experience that I’ve been through and I don’t think I can tell that story unless it’s something I can relate to. In the end I said ‘Do it. Find me a song that’s better than what we have right now.’ I kind of hoped they’d prove me wrong but I knew they wouldn’t.”
