Fur coats and big knickers as Gucci goes bohemian

Is the red carpet ready for big knickers? Oscar night might be near, but it would take a brave actress to wear Gucci's latest riff on evening wear.

It featured big, Bridget Jones-style pants worn layered under veils of billowing chiffon - and designer Frida Giannini managed to make them
absolutely seductive.

Bridget Jones wouldn't have had all that trouble with Mr Darcy if she'd had these babies in her wardrobe. They struck an edgy note among romantic, flowing gowns in jewel tones including emerald, ruby and sapphire.

Ardent music fan Giannini's inspiration for the coming autumn/winter was Florence Welch, the flame-haired pop singer who has arguably done even more for big pants than Bridget.

Certainly the bohemian spirit of Florence was alive in the long dresses, with silk organza petals adorning necks and creeping over shoulders.

Bohemia flowed through the whole collection in this, Gucci's 90th year. Demure pussy-bow blouses and pleated knee-length culottes gave a Seventies feel, further enhanced by the colour palette of rust, orange and mustard. There was a relaxed, breezy feel to the wide-leg trousers, knee-high boots and jaunty fedoras.

There is always a surfeit of fur at Milan Fashion Week. The Italians don't share British reservations about fur, and nor do the emerging Asian markets, which will no doubt be thoroughly excited by the brightly coloured fox fur chubbies, Afghan coats and stoles, which came in lilac, orange, emerald and teal.
