With the Cruise collections tour in full swing, last night it fell to Dior to stage theirs as they took to the runway in Los Angeles.

Known for their big budget spectacles, Cruise shows - otherwise known as 'Resort' collections - are an inter-season ready-to-wear lines produced by some of the biggest fashion houses.

This season Prada have put on a Milan show, Louis Vuitton will be showing in Kyoto on Sunday and Gucci in Florence on May 29.

And while Dior's Maria Grazia Chiuri is known for her ability to rise to the occasion, last night was one of her most creative displays so far.

The setting

Chiuri whisked the fashion pack off to the Santa Monica Mountains Nature Preserve in Los Angeles where guests watched the runway at sunset from tents with views of the hills and Dior-emblazoned hot air balloons.

Having established herself as the celebrity with her finger firmest on the fashion pulse at last week's Met Gala - if it really needed confirming - Rihanna lead the arrivals last night.

Joining her on the front row was Kate Bosworth, Miranda Kerr, Brie Larsen, Demi Moore, Charlize Theron, Olivia Palermo, Nick Jonas and newly-engaged Chiara Ferragni.

The seating arrangements

With the location of Cruise showcases almost as important as the collection itself, Chiuri's guests perched in airy tents on cushion-topped benches with rugs, blankets and cushions adorning the space.

The collection

The real purpose behind the event, Dior's spring/summer 2018 Cruise collection featured fittingly earthy shades of tan and rust with embroidered denim, sturdy boots and fringing adding a grounded and wearable feel to the otherwise otherworldly spectacle.

With such a big budget showcase - and having shipped fashion editor's half way across the world - a chic yet buzzing after party was an inevitability. And since Rihanna left immediately after the show, it fell to Solange Knowles, Beyonce's younger, jazzier sister, to take play the evening's set.
