Edward Enninful has been named as the new editor of British Vogue.

Enninful will take over from Alexandra Shulman, who announced her departure from the helm after 25 years in January this year. He will be the first male, and the first black person, to edit the title.

Currently Creative and Fashion Director of American magazine W, Enninful's experience as a fashion editor dates back to 1991 when he was hired as Fashion Director of i-D magazine at the age of 19 - a position he held for more than 20 years.

Ghanian-born as one of six children, Enninful was brought to London and grew up in the Ladbroke Grove area where, aged 16, he was scouted as a model and his fashion career began.

He attended Goldsmith's, University of London, but left before graduating in order to concentrate fully on his fashion editing career.

He was awarded an OBE by Queen Elizabeth last year, and in 2014 was named fashion creator of the year by the British Fashion Council.

"By virtue of his talent and experience, Edward is supremely prepared to assume the responsibility of British Vogue," stated Jonathan Newhouse, Chairman and Chief Executive of Condé Nast International, in the internal announcement today.

One of the many on the supposed shortlist for the role, Enninful was rumoured to be up against Emily Sheffield (Deputy Editor of British Vogue), Katie Grand (Editor of LOVE magazine) and Jo Ellison (Fashion Editor at the Financial Times).

On her departure from the role she held for 25 years, Alexandra Shulman said in January: "I have edited British Vogue for 25 years almost to the day, and to have steered it during our spectacular centenary has been one of the greatest privileges."

"During that time I have worked with an unparalleled collection of talent both inside and outside the magazine and have been lucky enough to see both Vogue and the British fashion industry expand and flourish."

"It has been very hard to find a rational reason to leave what is unquestionably a fascinating and rewarding role but last autumn I realised that I very much wanted to experience a different life and look forward to a future separate to Vogue."

"My career at Condé Nast has been everything I could have wished of it and my heartfelt thanks go to Nicholas Coleridge and Jonathan Newhouse for giving me so many opportunities, trusting me to take care of the precious cargo that is Vogue and allowing me the freedom to do the job exactly how I wanted."

Enninful will become Editor of British Vogue effective August 1.
