I know what you’re thinking. A bra top. Thanks, Prada, but when on earth will a grown woman ever feel the urge to wear one, and most importantly, do it successfully? Is it even acceptable or are we in danger of crossing over to lingerie during the day and potential mad-woman territory. Ultimately, can it work?
These questions, and the general fear you’re feeling, is quite normal. Fashion tends to throw us some catwalk curveballs but this one shouldn’t leave you running for tops that cover your midriff or investing in accelerated Bikram yoga classes.
First, it is a very flattering piece of clothing (go with me on this), and worn with something like highwaisted, wide-legged trousers it makes the outfit instantly cool and waists instantly tiny. Opt for a darker neutral colour trouser such as navy or black, which can still let you get away with such a statement top. An extra bonus is that this works whether you’re straight like a plank or curvy like Marilyn Monroe; curves are given or emphasised and this is never a bad thing.
Second, let’s not forget this is a summer trend. Summer usually means heat and the bra top is a fabulous excuse to wear very little and still be current, not to mention channel (or even better) wear Prada.
If this all still sounds too scary, try layering the bra top with a white T-shirt underneath and the ultimate in dressed-down cool, a pair of battered, light denim jeans. Add some court shoes, or if you’re feeling really adventurous, a pair of white slides. And there you have it, bra tops conquered. Miuccia would be proud.
