It's all super sustainable - and even uses a material made from naturally discarded crab shells

Allbirds changed the sustainable sneaker game when it launched with a single trainer constructed from Merino wool in 2016.

The brand has since gone from strength to strength, expanding its offering into performance running shoes and socks, and opening stores around the world, including a London flagship in October 2018.

Today, the San Francisco-based label unveils its first-ever clothing collection.

The first drop is a tight edit comprising just a t-shirt, a wool jumper and cardigan and a puffer jacket, constructed from regenerative natural materials like Merino wool and Eucalyptus tree fibre, which, unlike petroleum-based plastics used in many fabrics, are not damaging to the planet. FSC-certifications meanwhile ensure the highest animal welfare, environmental care and sustainability have been met in producing each product, each of which is labelled with its Carbon Footprint.

Allbirds Trino XO tee

The tee (£45) is made from an entirely new material innovation pioneered by the brand. A blend of Merino wool and Eucalyptus tree fibre, Trino XO is made with waste material from naturally discarded crab shells called Chitosan. Chitin is the second most abundant biopolymer on earth (after cellulose) and is found in crustacean shells, it has natural anti-odour properties too.The women’s boxy cut and the men’s slim-fit silhouettes are great wardrobe staples.

The woollen cardigan (£145) and jumper (£135) meanwhile are knitted from premium ZQ-certified New Zealand Merino. Like the Wool Allbirds use to make their sneakers, the Merino in the cardi and jumper is superfine and responsibly sourced. Both are inspired traditional fishermen’s sweaters and come slightly oversized with a textured knit and subtle stitching details.

Unlike most puffer jackets which are made from oil-derived synthetic fabrics, toxic fluorine-based water repellents, and down fill, the Allbirds TrinoTM puffer (£250), has an exterior made of a Merino wool and Tencel blend and coated with a fluorine-free Durable Water Repellent (DWR) to keep rain at bay. Instead of traditional synthetic or feather down, the sustainable coat is filled with Tencel and recycled polyester.

Allbirds is a company intent on crafting fashion products from better, more ecologically friendly materials, to combat the proliferation of petroleum-based materials in apparel and footwear. Since they launched with their superfine New Zealand Merino Wool sneakers, they have since developed a Eucalyptus fibre knit fabric and a Sugarcane-based EVA foam, both of which the brand open-sourced for all to use, including competitors.

The Allbirds clothing collection is available online and in store now.
