Ashton Kutcher shared a video to his social media channels yesterday calling for people to “educate” those posting ‘All Lives Matter’ in response to the George Floyd and Black Lives Matter protests.

The actor recounted a personal experience with his children and appeared to tear up at one point as he shared why the Black Lives Matter movement is so significant, saying, “For some people, black lives don’t matter at all.”

Last night, he shared the message after putting his children to bed with his wife Mila Kunis and talked about what happened after he posted in support of the social media movement.

He wrote, “I posted a black out of my social media channels and I just posted BLM [Black Lives Matter] and a lot of folks responded All Lives Matter. And I wanna talk about that a little bit.”

“I don’t think that the people are posting All Lives Matter should be cancelled. I think they should be educated. We all agree all lives matter, but I had a really poignant experience tonight when I was putting my kids down to bed that lent the words for why black lives matter,” he explained.

He shared that he, Kunis and their children usually have a nightly book reading ritual and something significant had happened in the recent one.

Kutcher recounted, “As we were reading our books, my son says, ‘Wait, why don’t I get to go first?’ And Mila said, ‘Because girls go first.’ And he said, ‘Yeah, but boys go first.’”

“And I looked at him and I said, ‘No, girls go first. You know why girls go first? For you and me girls go first. And the reason why is that for some boys, girls don’t get a go at all. So for you and me, girls go first,’” Kutcher continued.

He then said it had given him perspective on the Black Lives Matter movement.

“When it comes to Black Lives Matter, I think what folks that are writing All Lives Matter need to understand is that for some people-” he said, stopping as he appeared to become overwhelmed by emotion, “for some people black lives don’t matter at all. So for us, black lives matter.”

“So while you may have the best intentions in saying All Lives Matter, remember for some people black lives don’t matter at all,” he continued.

Kutcher has been posting in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, sharing a black square in support of the Black Out Tuesday movement yesterday and a photo of the American flag with BLM captioned.

Response to his posts has been divided, with many praising Kutcher for using his platform to support the movement in the wake of George Floyd’s death during police custody as others criticised him it - with one on his recent post writing that she was “unfriending/unfollowing anyone that’s jumping on the BLM bandwagon.”

Kutcher joins a number of celebrities rallying behind the Black Lives Matter movement, including the likes of Lizzo, Rihanna, John Boyega, Beyonce, Ava DuVernay, Drake, Halsey, Katy Perry, Paul Mescal and more. Many joined Black Out Tuesday (a movement which was both praised and criticised) and others have donated thousands of dollars to bail funds and anti-racist organistations.
