Apple has announced plans to raise money through Apple Pay and the App Store in recognition of World AIDS Day.

The tech company will donate $1 for every transaction made through Apple Pay at an Apple Store in person or online, as well as in apps, starting from today.

Apple is also using the App Store on iPad and iPhone to raise extra funds.

Candy Crush is offering special bundles where 100 per cent of the proceeds from in-app purchases will be donated to Bono’s (RED) charity.

All of the money raised will go to the Global Fund, a worldwide non-profit organisation which helps to fight AIDS and HIV, and supports patients of the disease.

The extra donation comes on top of the $30 million (£22 million) that Apple has already raised for AIDS research this year, which will fund ARV medication that stops HIV-positive mothers passing the condition on to their unborn babies.

“Connecting through our products and services helps make it easy for our customers to join us in the effort to create the first AIDS-free generation,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives, in a statement.

“By working with (RED) to stop the transmission of HIV from moms to their unborn babies, we’re already seeing a significant impact in areas where help is needed most.

"We’re committed to continuing the fight and empowering future generations through these vital efforts.”

Over the last 11 years, Apple has raised $160 million (£118 million) in its collaborations with (RED), which include special edition red-coloured products and accessories.
