Young Bailey has a shot

With contacts like hers it was only a matter of time before Paloma Bailey forged a career as a model. Her mother Catherine was one of the most glamorous catwalk queens of her time and father David is a world-famous photographer.

Now the teenager has taken her first proper steps into modelling with a set of pictures taken by Mary McCartney-Donald, daughter of Sir Paul McCartney.

With her mother's dark, intense beauty and an air of determination she has clearly inherited from her father, Paloma has a quiet confidence that belies her 17 years.

She admits that modelling is fun, but she also has a strong inclination to follow a musical career.

Her passions are hip hop and drum'n'bass, and when she is not in front of the camera she likes to be behind the decks, DJ-ing.

"Apart from modelling, I'd love to run a music production company," she says.

Paloma was posing for the current edition of Harpers & Queen magazine, which touts her as one of the "Class of 2003 - the cream of a new generation of British models".

At the age of five she was pictured sitting in the front row as designer Bruce Oldfield unveiled a collection. On her left sat her father and on her right was his previous wife, model Marie Helvin. Paloma watched as her mother appeared on the catwalk.

But what did dad think of the latest pictures - the first to be taken of his daughter by anyone other than himself ?

"I have only just seen the photos for the first time and they're very good," he told the Standard. "I'm quite impressed with Mary McCartney. I really like the naturalness of them. Really 'charming' would be the word I would use."

Mr Bailey, 65, added: "I think she's only ever worked for me before. Her first ever job for me was when she posed up with Naomi [Campbell] for Italian Vogue about five years ago - a good way for her to start.

"It's not something she's done a lot of. She's still at a stage when she doesn't really know what to do. I think she's more keen on music to be honest.

"She's writing all the time. She likes drum'n'bass and hip hop - but I don't know much about that since the nearest I get to pop music is Duke Ellington."
