Yet more chaos on Tube as repairs overrun

Tens of thousands of Tube passengers suffered yet more disruption today after engineers again failed to finish night engineering work on time.

This affected five lines - two of which, the Bakerloo and Metropolitan, failed to open at all through central London in time for the morning peak period.

There were also delays to the Circle, Jubilee and Hammersmith & City lines.

All the problems centred on the failure to finish work in the Baker Street area in time for the morning start of service. Baker Street is one of the busiest and most complex track junctions on the network and used by all five lines. There was no early service in either direction on the Bakerloo line between Paddington and Elephant & Castle.

The Metropolitan line stayed shut between Wembley Park and Aldgate. A signal failure also halted services at the Buckinghamshire end of the line.

Work on the Bakerloo and Metropolitan lines is the responsibility of Metronet, which caused delays recently with late finishes on the Circle, District and Central lines.

Transport commissioner Bob Kiley has spoken of long-term closures of key sections of lines for engineering work but the Mayor has overruled him.
