Woman's arm severed in fall from car

13 April 2012

A woman had part of her arm severed after she was thrown from a car on a motorway, police said today.

The 29-year-old is thought to have been a prostitute who had been travelling with a customer who had picked her up in Glasgow city centre.

She was discovered on the westbound carriageway of the M8 motorway in Renfrewshire with the lower part of her arm missing.

A passing motorist raised the alarm after finding the woman on the motorway across from Arkleston Cemetery at Paisley in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The woman, who has not been named, was initially taken to Paisley's Royal Alexandra Hospital, but later transferred to Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Her limb was found at Arkleston Road and surgeons attempted to reattach it but were unsuccessful.

Police are now treating the incident, which happened at around 1.50am yesterday, as attempted murder. It is understood the victim had got into a dark coloured saloon car in Holm Street at Wellington Street at around midnight with a man.

The car drove to Arkleston Road where it is thought the woman was thrown from the vehicle before she was injured.

Detective Inspector Steven Wilson, the officer in charge of the investigation, said: "We are currently trying to establish exactly what happened and are appealing for the public's help.

"The woman's limb was found in Arkleston Road near to the cemetery and we believe that it was in this area that she was thrown from the car. I am anxious to speak to anyone who saw the woman entering the vehicle in Holm Street, around midnight, or saw her leaving the vehicle in the area of Arkleston Road.

"I would also like to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity of Arkleston Cemetery between 1am and 1.50am.

"Arkleston Road at Arkleston Cemetery is on the west side of the M8 motorway between Hillington and Paisley and can be accessed from Hillington Industrial Estate, Gallowhill and Paisley Road Renfrew."

The woman remained in hospital today and was in a stable condition, Strathclyde Police said.
