Access

  • 71 per cent of children have a home PC with internet access.
  • 38 per cent have mobile phones with internet access.
  • 88 per cent of the middle classes have accessed the internet at home, compared with 61 per cent of the working classes.
  • 19 per cent have internet access in their bedrooms.
  • 79 per cent mostly use the internet alone.

Chat rooms

  • 21 per cent admit to using the internet to access chat rooms.
  • A third of nine- to 19-year-olds have received unwanted sexual or nasty comments via email or chat.
  • Almost half of nine- to 19-yearolds admit to giving personal information online.
  • Nearly half who go online once a week have given out full name, age, address, phone number, hobbies or name of their school to someone they "met" on the internet.

Pornography

  • Nearly six in 10 have come into contact with online pornography.
  • 38 per cent have seen a pornographic pop-up advert while doing something else.
  • 36 per cent have accidentally found a pornographic website.
  • 25 per cent have received pornographic junk mail by email or text.
  • 10 per cent have visited a pornographic website on purpose.
