Warsi to bolster UK's relationship with Islamic world

Diplomatic duties: Baroness Warsi
12 April 2012

Baroness Warsi is to embark on a summer of diplomacy aimed at strengthening Britain's relations with the Islamic world.

The UK's first female Muslim Cabinet minister will seek support for a political solution in Afghanistan as part of three planned trips abroad.

She will also discuss the aftermath of the Arab spring and take part in a remembrance service on the 16th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre, which left 8,000 Muslim men and boys dead.

The trips will be taken as a sign that she is being used as a de facto ambassador to Muslim countries.

The 40-year-old, who is also Tory co-chairman, will begin by addressing a high-profile meeting of Islamic foreign ministers in Kazakhstan this month.

Her invitation to the gathering of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference - an association of 56 Islamic states which is the biggest international group outside the United Nations - is being billed as a "landmark achievement" by government sources.
